Insights from questionnaire responses

Introduction:

Sound funeral has created as a distinct form of ritualistic expression, offering a platform for individuals to mourn the animals. By employing various sounds, visuals, and poetic elements,  this sound event aims to create an emotional and transformative experience for participants. The following analysis presents the findings of a questionnaire-based study that explored the perceptions and impressions of individuals who engaged in a sound funeral.

Due to time constraints, the analysis of this questionnaire was based on three valid questionnaires received so far. It basically delves into the subjective experiences and perspectives of individuals who participated in a sound funeral, aiming to understand the emotions evoked, the effectiveness of the sounds used, the resonance of the visual presentation, suggestions for improvement, and reflections on the coexistence of animals and humans in urban environments. The findings provide valuable insights into the potential of sound funerals as a unique and meaningful practice for mourning animals.

Methods:

The Likert scale approach was used for this questionnaire, and it also includes open-ended questions to gather qualitative data from participants. The questions were designed to elicit responses regarding the emotions evoked during the sound funeral, the effectiveness of the sounds used, the resonance of the visual presentation, suggestions for improvement, and reflections on the coexistence of animals and humans in urban environments. A diverse sample of participants, including an old lady from Yemen, young  couple from Spain, also an elder who works in the city hall provided their unique perspectives on these aspects.

Results and Discussion:

  1. Emotions evoked: The participants expressed a range of emotions in response to the sound funeral. These included feelings of tranquility, peace, sadness, connection, and contemplation. The sound funeral evoked a profound emotional response, providing a space for participants to process their grief and find solace in the ritualistic experience.

  2. Atmosphere of sounds: The sounds used in the sound funeral were perceived to be highly effective in creating a meaningful experience. The participants highlighted the importance of incorporating natural sounds, such as water sound, bird songs, but also intense sound of breaking glass, etc. These sounds were found to evoke a sense of harmony, renewal, and unity with nature, thereby enhancing the overall impact of the ritual.

  3. Resonance of visual presentation: The visual presentation of the turtle dove resonated emotionally with the participants. It served as a poignant symbol of both vulnerability and resilience in the face of urbanization. The visual imagery, combined with the sounds, created a multisensory experience that deepened the participants' connection to the subject matter and facilitated a better understanding of the plight of animals in urban environments.

  4. Suggestions for improvement: Because many people don't know anything about turtle dove and the environment in which urban birds live, it is recommended that more background information about turtle dove and related context be provided to help participants enter the situation.

  5. Coexistence of animals and humans in urban environments: Two participants shared their thoughts on the coexistence of animals and humans in the city. They emphasized the importance of creating spaces and initiatives that promote biodiversity and support the well-being of wildlife. The sound funeral experience heightened their awareness of the need for empathy, understanding, and responsible actions to maintain a harmonious relationship between humans and animals in urban environments.

Brief summary:

The findings from the questionnaire responses obtain some insights from people who has willing to know more about animals, or animal lover's into the emotional and transformative power of sound funerals. The study reveals the diverse range of emotions evoked, the effectiveness of the sounds used, the resonance of the visual presentation, suggestions for improvement, and reflections on the coexistence of animals and humans in urban environments. I see the potential of sound funeral as a unique and meaningful practice for mourning animals, it's beyond a sound event. (More reflection can be found in log#6.)
